Happy Pride!

It’s the day of the Pride parade here in Seattle, and in light of that, we decided to mix up a couple of cocktails to celebrate. First the Mattachine, to honor one of the first organizations to fight the good fight, then the DOMA Down, to celebrate the repeal of  law that should’ve never been passed. Strong and elegant or fizzy and refreshing, your choice :)

mattachine-finalMattachine

  • 2 oz of a full-flavored vodka (we used 2 Bars)
  • 1/4 oz Creme Yvette
  • 1/4 oz Barenjager
  • 2 dashes of lime bitters

Stir with ice, garnish with two cherries.

Nose

Raspberry, grain/malt, fainter notes of mango, honey, lime.

Palate

Berry and floral notes at first that carry into the mid-palate, where honey and tropical flavors join in. Honey comb and violets on the finish.

doma-downDOMA Down

  • 2 oz gin (we used a very juniper forward gin here, in the case the #3 from New Deal)
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 oz Aperol
  • 1/2 oz triple sec
  • 1 tsp simple syrup
  • 1 dash Spanish Bitters (think camomile, grapefruit and some perfume notes)
  • 2 sprigs mint

Muddle mint in shaker, add other ingredients. Shake with ice, pour into a Collins glass with ice. Garnish with a cherry, a lime wheel and a sprig of mint.

Nose

Mint, grapefruit and bitter orange.

Palate

Mint, some sweetness but stays on the dry side, little bit of bitter orange from the Aperol. Then juniper followed by a dry bitter grapefruit finish. Light and refreshing.

Given the lovely day we’re having here and the recent legal victories for LGBT rights, we hope everyone out there is having one hell of a Pride. Cheers!
